Protecting Your Pets From The Winter Cold
Keeping pets safe during winter months sometimes can be a challenge.
Winter means fireplaces, candles and heaters. Use caution, always, when pets are around. Be sure if you use candles that
it are heavy enough to stay put and better yet, has a dome on it to keep pets safe. Remember jumping cats and wagging tails can easily
knock down a candle.
Winter also means antifreeze. The ethylene glycol in antifreeze is extremely toxic and can be fatal even in small amounts if ingested.
Wind-chill can threaten a pet's life. A dog or cat is happiest and healthiest when kept indoors.
Do not leave dogs or cats outdoors when the temperature drops.
When the snow hits make sure you provide a clear path to their "toilet area" and supervise the event. Too often dogs are let out in bad
weather alone because it's too much trouble for us to put on our boots and snow gear. Don't let your dog become a statistic! Dogs
are not able to properly pick up a scent in snow, so always have your dog on a leash when in an open area, or they may not be able to find
their way back home.
You might want to shorten their walk outside when it's bitter cold and bring them inside even if they are "outside" dogs.
Cats often get frostbite on their ear tips if left outside. They are an important part of our family, lets take care of them!
